How-to guide

Delete a phone number, or get one back

Short answer

Open the number in the Enfonica Console, open the menu at the top right, and then select Delete. Deleting disconnects the number. If you delete one by mistake, contact support straight away. We might be able to bring it back, but it isn't guaranteed.

Before you start

  • Access to the Enfonica project that holds the number.

Before you delete a number

Deleting a number disconnects it, and someone else might be given it later. Before you delete a number, make sure that you've really finished with it. Check for these cases:

  • The number is moving to another provider. Don't delete it. A port needs an active number, so keep it until the port completes, and we remove it for you. For more information, see Port a number away from Enfonica.
  • Customers still call it. Check that it isn't on your website, invoices, signage, or a listing somewhere. Calls to it stop working as soon as it's deleted.
  • You've sent SMS from it. After the number is deleted, replies stop arriving, including opt-out replies such as STOP. Keep the number until people have stopped replying to your last messages.
  • It's a range. Deleting a range deletes every number in it. To delete only some of them, split the range first. To learn how, see Choose where calls to your number go.

Delete a number

  1. In the Enfonica Console, go to Phone Numbers > My numbers, and then select the number.
  2. Open the menu (the three dots at the top right of the page), and then select Delete.
  3. The Console asks you to confirm and shows the number you're deleting. Check that it's the right one, and then select Release.

The Console shows "Phone number released" and returns you to your numbers.

The menu isn't shown while a number is Pending activation. To stop a number that's still porting in, contact support.

What happens after you delete it

The number is disconnected and removed from your project. Calls and messages to it no longer reach you. There's no charge for deleting a number, and its monthly fee stops. A monthly fee already charged isn't refunded. Calls made to it until you delete it are billed as usual.

A deleted number then goes into quarantine for at least six months. After that, it can be given to someone else. When that happens, it can't come back.

Get a deleted number back

If you deleted a number by mistake, contact support straight away. The sooner we hear from you, the better the chance that we can bring it back. We can't guarantee it. Tell us:

  • The number, in full international format, for example +61255501234.
  • The project it should go back to.
  • Roughly when it was deleted.

A number we bring back counts as a new purchase, so its monthly fee applies again, along with any activation fee. It comes back without its old setup. As soon as it's back in your project, add its incoming call handlers, and check its regulatory listing.

A number is missing from your project

If a number you expect to see isn't in Phone Numbers > My numbers, it's usually for one of these reasons:

  • It was moved to another project. If you manage several projects, check the others.
  • It was deleted. To ask for it back, see Get a deleted number back.
  • It was ported to another provider. When a port away completes, the number is removed from your project.

We can look up a number's history, including which project held it, and when it moved or was deleted. Contact support with the number, and we'll find out where it went.

Check that it worked

  • After you delete a number. It no longer appears in Phone Numbers > My numbers.
  • After we bring a number back. It appears in your project again. Add its call handlers. Then call it from a mobile, and check that the call reaches the right place.
