Short answer
Register each client's sender ID in the Enfonica project that sends their messages, using the client's ABN and details rather than yours. Someone at the client whose email is on their ABR record then confirms it in ACMA Assist.
- Applies to
- Cloud SMS, SMS Marketing
- Who can do this
- Your team, with an authorized representative at each client
On this page
Before you start
- Your client's agreement to register the sender ID in their name.
- The Enfonica project that will send the client's messages.
- A sender ID that matches the client's registered business name, company name, registered trademark or a domain they use.
Whose details go on the registration?
Use the details of the organization whose name appears on the message, not whoever sends it. ACMA checks whether the sender ID clearly points to the organization behind it. So register a client's sender ID with your client's ABN, your client's details, and a representative from your client's business.
For example, say you send appointment reminders for a clinic called Northwind Dental. This table shows how the rule applies.
| Sender ID | Registered with | Why |
|---|---|---|
Northwind | Your client's details | It's your client's name, so their ABN and representative stand behind it |
NWDentalApt | Your client's details | Your client's name, shortened, plus a word for the message's purpose |
| A sender ID from your own name | Your details | Recipients see your name, so it's your registration |
Reminders | Can't be registered | It describes the message, not an organization |
The same rule applies to project names. A sender ID such as CarSurvey doesn't link to you or your client, so ACMA won't accept it from anyone. For more examples from agencies and research firms, see SMS sender IDs: what you can and can't register.
Collect these from each client
Gather these details before you start, so you don't need a second round of emails:
- Their ABN
- The registered business name, company name, trademark number, or domain that the sender ID matches
- Their web address and business address
- The name, email address, phone number, and role of their authorized representative
Check the client's Australian Business Register (ABR) record now, too. It's the best way to stop a registration from stalling.
The representative must be someone at your client who:
- Can act for the business.
- Has a myID.
- Can open the authorized contact or service-of-notice email listed for the client's ABN on the ABR.
ACMA checks the representative against your client's record. So someone from your own business can't confirm the registration for your client.
Register the sender ID
Register each sender ID in the project that sends that client's messages, because Enfonica checks registrations per project. Each registration takes a few minutes.
- In the Enfonica Console, open the project that sends this client's messages.
- Go to Cloud SMS > Sender IDs.
- Select Register Sender ID.
- Enter the sender ID.
- Under Valid use cases, select each one that the sender ID matches for your client, such as Registered business name or Registered domain name.
- Under Organisation details, enter your client's ABN, web address, and business address, not your own.
- Under Contact information, enter your client's representative.
- Select the declaration checkbox.
- Select Submit registration. The sender ID appears on Cloud SMS > Sender IDs with the status Pending Verification.
- Tell your client's representative to expect an email from ACMA with the subject
SMS Sender ID Register: request to confirm your application.
For the rules on the sender ID itself, including its format, see Register an alphanumeric sender ID for SMS in Australia.
Brief your client's representative
Before you submit, tell your client's representative what to expect:
- They'll sign in to ACMA Assist, ACMA's portal, with their own myID.
- ACMA will check their email address against your client's ABR record.
- In ACMA Assist, they select the sender ID, and then select Confirm registration of Sender ID application.
The representative is the only person who can finish the registration, and most stalled registrations are waiting on this step. The request doesn't expire, so they can confirm it whenever they're ready.
To walk them through it from their side, send them You've been nominated as the authorized contact for a sender ID registration.
Check that it worked
Each sender ID's status appears on Cloud SMS > Sender IDs in the project you registered it in. The status changes from Pending Verification to Submitted to ACMA after we lodge the registration. It changes to Active after ACMA approves it.
When the status is Active, send a test SMS from the sender ID to your own mobile phone. It arrives showing your client's sender ID.
If a registration stays at Submitted to ACMA, see Sender ID registration is stuck or was rejected to learn what to check with your client.
When you stop sending for a client
When you finish working with a client, ask support to revoke the client's sender ID. We revoke it in the Console and in ACMA Assist, and its status changes to Revoked. From then on, messages from it through your project are blocked. If the client comes back, register the sender ID again.
Questions
Can we send our clients' messages under our own name instead?
Yes, if the sender ID matches your own registered name, trademark, or domain. Register it once with your own details. Recipients then see your name instead of your client's.
Can one person at our company confirm every client's registration?
No. ACMA checks the representative against the ABR record of the organization that the sender ID belongs to. So each client's registration needs someone from that client.
We send for the same client from more than one project. What do we do?
The sender ID needs to be Active in each project that sends from it. After it's Active in one project, contact support, and we'll add it to the others. ACMA doesn't need to approve it again.
Our client also sends to New Zealand. Does the registration cover that?
No. New Zealand doesn't accept alphanumeric sender IDs at all, so messages there need to come from a short code. See Sending SMS to other countries.
A client's representative has left. Do we need to update the registration?
Not if it's already Active, because ACMA uses the representative only for the approval. If it isn't Active yet, contact support, and we'll withdraw it. Then you can submit a new registration with the new representative.
